Cummins Power Generation climbs Bulgaria’s mountain peaks to provide standby power
Standby power for remotely situated base stations that support Bulgaria’s television, mobile phone and fixed telecoms networks has been provided by Cummins Power Generation. Bulgarian distributor IPO literally climbed mountains to install six generator sets in weather-protected huts situated at heights of 1000-1800m in the country’s mountain ranges.
IPO made sure the standby power solution would meet these exacting requirements by equipping the six generator sets to operate under permanent remote monitoring using iWatch100, and extending their running time by the provision of external fuel tanks. Five of the generator sets are C70 D5 models, while the sixth is a C110 D5, each delivering standby power of around 50 kW. The installation work, including transporting the generator sets up the mountains, was undertaken by IPO itself. The base stations are all operated by NURTS Bulgaria, a division of the country’s largest telecom operator Vivacom. NURTS selected Cummins Power Generation because it could deliver remote monitoring and control of generator sets, proven reliability and a fast response time for servicing sites that are difficult to access. Low maintenance costs and low fuel consumption were also crucial factors.
The base stations must be guaranteed to function unattended since they are all between 10km and 60km from their nearest major towns and in addition most of them are inaccessible throughout the winter. Any failure of mains supply would be difficult to repair quickly, especially in snowy weather. In winter an interruption of the mains supply would last at least several hours, and quite possibly several days.

Korea’s fastest Internet provider, SK Broadband won over by Cummins Power Generation
In recent market developments, the emergence of ICT services like Mobile Office and Cloud Computing has coincided with interests and take-ups of smartphones, tablet PCs and Internet media like Smart TVs. This market evolution means that a major service provider like SK Broadband can ill-afford downtime and service breakdown, and will continue to be reliant on more and more innovative and effective power supply and solution systems. Cummins Power Generation promptly stepped up to the challenge by providing a full-integrated power solution plan, progressing from design, right through to comprehensive aftermarket support from the Cummins Sales & Service Korea team. Cummins’ extensive portfolio of equipment, parts and technology further allows the power system to integrate with the customer’s existing set-up with ease. Yet another advantage that Cummins brings is the ability to seamlessly interface and run the PCC controller (PowerCommand controller) and the paralleling system. Moreover, the data exchange between controller and paralleling system is simple and direct. With these credible and proven advantages, the customer enjoys peace of mind, and is able to concentrate on growing the business, and providing reliable uninterrupted services for their customers in turn.
