Cummins Power Generation Earns EPA Tier 4 Interim Certification for 30–40 kW Generator Sets

We’re announcing that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has certified three more models of generator sets as meeting the new Tier 4 Interim (T4i) emission-reduction standards. The certification covers generator set models producing 30–40 kW of electricity.

The EPA established a tiered system of emission standards in 2004. The final emissions tier will be implemented in two stages: Tier 4 Interim and Final Tier 4. Cummins Power Generation proudly provides EPA emissions-compliant products that conform to current standards. The standards mandate substantial reductions in several emissions, especially oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter. The standards cover diesel engines used on highway, off-road and stationary applications.

The newly certified Cummins Power Generation 30, 35 and 40 kW models are powered by a Cummins 3.3 liter engine and come standard with the PowerCommand® control system. An increased-capacity fuel tank and a factory-installed battery charger are among many of the optional features available to satisfy specific requirements.

Gene Schellhorn, Product Manager said, “Cummins Power Generation is pleased to have these products added to our growing list of T4i-certified systems. These 30, 35 and 40 kW generator sets can help many commercial property owners and small businesses weather power outages in comfort and safety, allowing business to continue operation uninterrupted.” Orders for the Cummins 30, 35 and 40 kW generator sets can be placed starting in April 2012.  Contact your local distributor or visit us at Cumminspower.com for pricing and availability.

Cummins Power Generation at Montana’s leading energy conference

0
comments

The Montana Energy Forum is a growing community of concerned citizens committed to two goals — achieving energy security for the United States and holding elected officials accountable for shaping sound energy policies. The forum believes in an “all of the above” approach to energy policy, including traditional energy sources (e.g., oil, natural gas, coal) as well as renewable energy sources and technologies. On April 3–4, the group will convene at Montana Energy 2012, the leading energy conference in the state.

The conference includes energy industry representatives, suppliers of goods and services, contractors, local government officials and economic development professionals. Cummins Rocky Mountain is proud to be an exhibitor at the event. A rental generator set model will be on display that has been especially popular within the oil and gas industry.

Larry Fetting, General Manager, Americas Rental Segment, will be on hand to support our regional Cummins distributor and meet with customers and other attendees. Oil and gas exploration is an important industry in the state, with substantially increased drilling activity in the Williston Basin in recent years. There are also several major coal mines in Montana. Reliable rental power is essential to many of these energy-supplying operations.

Please stop by and say hello if you are attending the event!

Hearing is believing: new Cummins Onan video compares sound levels for home standby generators

In 2010, an independent global company, SGS U.S. Testing, compared the power quality from residential generators rated at or near 20 kW made by the top four U.S. manufacturers. The tests showed that the RS20A generator from Cummins Onan was clearly superior. In comparison testing of actual, unedited noise outputs from the same four competitive generators, the RS20A is the clear (and quiet) winner, as your ears will be able to attest.

The video demonstrates the noise levels from the four models as the audio plays the actual sound that was recorded at the same 7-meter distance from the units. The tests were conducted on the same day under the same weather conditions.

As Chad Boutet, marketing manager for Residential and Commercial Property Products at Cummins Onan, explains, “The tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the several techniques we use to reduce noise, including the patented enclosure.”

Compare the results for yourself by watching and listening here.

For the second year in a row, the RS20A/AC residential generator from Cummins Onan has been ranked No. 1 in Quality in Builder magazine’s 2011 Brand Use survey.  As a result, Cummins Onan has been awarded a 2012 Brand Leader Award by the magazine for the category of residential generators, a distinction the brand also earned in 2011.

Builder magazine is a leading publication covering residential construction in the U.S. The Brand Use Study is conducted each year by the magazine’s publisher, Hanley-Wood, and Readex, a nationally recognized independent research company. The study asks over 10,000 builders, builder-developers, and general contractors about their brand preferences in some 80 product categories.  For each product category, one question the respondents answered was: How would you rate the QUALITY of each brand you are familiar with?

Chad Boutet, marketing manager, Residential and Commercial Property for Cummins Power Generation, said, “We are gratified to receive this recognition again from home builders and Builder Magazine. It reinforces the outstanding reputation of the RS20A/AC, which has also been recognized as the quietest in a comparison of four leading competitors and has received a Gold Award in Consulting-Specifying Engineer’s (CSE’s) Product of the Year Competition.”

The RS20A residential standby generator can run on either natural gas or propane and is linked directly to the homeowner’s permanent fuel supply. The unit is permanently installed outdoors, but it offers an in-home display, email notification and remote monitoring via the Internet. The unit comes with a 5-year,

2,000-hour limited warranty, is EPA and CARB Emissions Certified and is designed and manufactured in the USA.

Cummins Power Generation in year-end issue of Distributed Energy

Distributed Energy serves the information needs of more than 20,000 subscribers interested in protecting their operations and facilities against power interruptions and increasing their energy self-reliance. Cummins Power Generation “at work” can be found throughout its November–December issue.

A photograph of the Cummins installation at Delta Dental of Michigan headquarters is featured on the cover. In addition, an article on “Commercial Scale DE” describes the research under way at the University of North Dakota’s Energy and Environmental Research Center. The center is helping Cummins Power Generation develop ways to handle “challenging fuel stocks” such as railroad ties.

The feature story about “Mandatory Maintenance” includes a photo of a 100 kW Cummins generator set and several quotes from Ani Natekar, Cummins Sales Application Engineer. Natekar points out how changing business requirements for backup power have made quicker start times a must, and he stresses the importance of regular testing and maintenance. He also discusses how to reduce generator set noise: “The easiest way for companies to address noise issues is for them to buy a complete genset package from a manufacturer that already includes noise-deadening equipment… This way, end users won’t have to deal with the issue on their own.”

Diesel Progress covers Cummins Power Generation Acoustical Testing Center with in-depth profile

Our new Acoustical Testing Center (ATC) is “making more noise”—pun intended. The interior of the hemi-anechoic testing chamber is featured on the cover of the November issue of the North American edition of Diesel Progress, a leading trade publication. An in-depth article follows inside.

Written by Mike Brezonick, Associate Publisher, the article includes additional photos of the building and describes the ATC and its purpose. Brezonick notes the increase in noise regulations for generator sets around the world, and how Cummins Power Generation is working to meet that challenge and gain a competitive advantage with the development of quieter power systems.

Martin Myers, the Director of Global Applied Technology for Cummins Power Generation was interviewed for the article. He comments on the patented, sound-absorbing wedges; the advantages of precisely controlled indoor testing; and the mix of performance testing, development work, and technology development projects that the ATC will handle.

The article concludes with a quote from Myers: “We have a whole range of things planned out to be doing in this building, which would not have been done or could not have been done to the same level that we’re going to be able to do. It’s a huge competitive advantage to be able to do this kind of work at this level of integrity. The building is capable of running 24/7, so I think there’s a lot of opportunity.”
