Cummins Power Generation Earns EPA Tier 4 Interim Certification for 30–40 kW Generator Sets
The EPA established a tiered system of emission standards in 2004. The final emissions tier will be implemented in two stages: Tier 4 Interim and Final Tier 4. Cummins Power Generation proudly provides EPA emissions-compliant products that conform to current standards. The standards mandate substantial reductions in several emissions, especially oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter. The standards cover diesel engines used on highway, off-road and stationary applications. The newly certified Cummins Power Generation 30, 35 and 40 kW models are powered by a Cummins 3.3 liter engine and come standard with the PowerCommand® control system. An increased-capacity fuel tank and a factory-installed battery charger are among many of the optional features available to satisfy specific requirements. Gene Schellhorn, Product Manager said, “Cummins Power Generation is pleased to have these products added to our growing list of T4i-certified systems. These 30, 35 and 40 kW generator sets can help many commercial property owners and small businesses weather power outages in comfort and safety, allowing business to continue operation uninterrupted.” Orders for the Cummins 30, 35 and 40 kW generator sets can be placed starting in April 2012. Contact your local distributor or visit us at Cumminspower.com for pricing and availability.

Cummins Power Generation Launches Microsite Devoted to Emergency Preparedness
Though many of us would like to think we’re ready for natural disasters and other emergencies, are we as prepared as we can be? It may not be possible to completely avoid these situations, but we can certainly increase our chances of weathering these unexpected challenges without serious consequences. For example, an increasing number of companies are planning for natural disasters. It’s no wonder why, when the median cost of downtime for a small business in the United States is $12,500 — each day. Specifically, having a standby generator set can keep a business running without interruption, more than paying for the cost of the generator over just one or two power outages. And what about the sophisticated medical devices that so many people have in their homes today? Oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, cardiac monitoring systems, and other diagnostic equipment — all these devices depend on reliable power to do their essential work to keep people safe in their homes. A standby generator can be a lifesaving piece of equipment that keeps these devices operating. Reflecting on all these personal and business needs and the increasing frequency of power outages, we decided to create a new microsite that gathers—in one location—a great deal of information that you can use to be prepared. For instance, the site has continuously updated information on tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, heat waves and earthquakes — represented by informative and engaging infographics. To help you deal successfully with these events, there are links to the Red Cross and FEMA websites, which have practical checklists of equipment to have on hand, as well as links to The Centers for Disease Control, the Home Safety Council, the American Medical Association, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. And, there are also links to further resources where you can get insight into some of the lessons learned from events like Hurricane Katrina. We all know life and mother nature can be unpredictable and disruptive, but there’s a great deal that you can do to prepare for severe weather and power outages. We hope you find this website invaluable in helping you stay safe and comfortable if or when your power goes out, for whatever reason. Click here! |

Hearing is believing: new Cummins Onan video compares sound levels for home standby generators
In 2010, an independent global company, SGS U.S. Testing, compared the power quality from residential generators rated at or near 20 kW made by the top four U.S. manufacturers. The tests showed that the RS20A generator from Cummins Onan was clearly superior. In comparison testing of actual, unedited noise outputs from the same four competitive generators, the RS20A is the clear (and quiet) winner, as your ears will be able to attest. The video demonstrates the noise levels from the four models as the audio plays the actual sound that was recorded at the same 7-meter distance from the units. The tests were conducted on the same day under the same weather conditions. As Chad Boutet, marketing manager for Residential and Commercial Property Products at Cummins Onan, explains, “The tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the several techniques we use to reduce noise, including the patented enclosure.” Compare the results for yourself by watching and listening here. |
Hear for yourself how little noise Cummins Onan will be making at IBS
As usual, there will be a lot to see at this year’s International Builders’ Show (IBS). But in Booth W614, what you won’t hear is the thing you’ll really want to see. We’ll have our Cummins Onan RS20A residential standby generator on display. But even better, you’ll be able to hear and judge for yourself through side-by-side sound comparisons of the RS20A and three leading competitors. The RS20A is so quiet, it earned BUILDER magazine’s 2012 Brand Leader Award for Quality. Taking place in Orlando, Florida, February 8–11, IBS is the largest annual light construction trade show in the world. Some 50,000 attendees will be visiting more than 1,000 vendors spread over 500,000 square feet of exhibits. But we’ll be easy to find in Booth W614. And, to thank you for stopping by, you’ll receive special show pricing — a $500 discount — on our RS13 or RS20 residential standby generators. Now that’s something you really do want to hear, right? |
Sending you Cummins Power Generation thanks and holiday cheer!
As 2011 draws to a close, we wanted to thank everyone who helped make it a good year at Cummins Power Generation. But, we also wanted to do it in a fun way that would make it possible to spread the holiday cheer even more. So we’ve created a microsite as our way of saying thanks to all of you. The site contains a host of information. For example, it poses the question, “What would it be like to celebrate the holidays without power?” With another click, Cummins employees from different countries around the world describe how they celebrate the holidays. And to help spread the cheer, there’s a greeting card section. In addition to being able to browse Cummins cards from the past, there are six card options you can customize with your own personal holiday cheer message. You can create and send a special card to everyone you know . . . from coworkers . . . to friends . . . to relatives, too. Once again, our thanks to you. We wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year! VISIT THE SITE.

Cummins Power Generation employees pitched in with cleanup of coworker’s home hit by Minneapolis tornado
On Sunday morning, May 22, a tornado ripped through north Minneapolis and Fridley, Minnesota, leaving a trail of downed trees and power lines and over 100 seriously damaged houses. The storm was also responsible for one death and 30 injuries. Cummins designer John McCarthy was home with his wife and son when the twister struck.
The roof of their house was lifted off and deposited in a neighbor’s yard, and several windows were shattered. Heavy rain was soaking everything, and a tree had fallen on the front of the house. With the help of relatives, friends and complete strangers, McCarthy moved some family belongings into a relatively undamaged garage.
McCarthy also called work to say he would not be able to come in the next day. Instead, several of his coworkers came to him. A team led by Jerry Murray arrived Monday morning and got to work moving everything that could be moved into the garage. They also cleared the yard of debris.
McCarthy described the responsiveness of his colleagues as incredible. “I had this overwhelming task to save as many personal belongings as I could before it started raining again,” he said. “Instead, in a matter of four hours, the task was complete.”
Murray was also impressed by what his team accomplished in a short time. But he was not surprised by the generosity of his coworkers. “I’ve been here 18 years, and I’ve always seen Cummins to be very responsive to the community and people.”
The McCarthy family is living in temporary quarters while repairs are completed on their home.
