Cummins Czech Republic has provided a standby power solution to the DataCube data centre – the largest and most modern data centre in Slovakia, and probably in all of central Europe. The newly opened 6,700 m2 data centre meets National Security Authority safety class 3, and exceeds European Tier III+ environmental standards.

The DataCube data centreThe first implementation stage required two generator sets to provide a total power of 3.4 MW. Cummins Czech Republic installed Cummins Power Generation C2200 D5 and C2000 D5 generator sets, equipped with QSK60 engines and managed by a PowerCommand® PCC3201 controls. The system is designed to ensure synchronisation of multiple generator sets during later implementation stages. When operating at full capacity, the data centre is expected to require a total power of 25 MW. This goal will be achieved in five phases and will involve a total of 13 generator sets with a rated performance of 1,675 kVA to 2,500 kVA.

Cummins Czech Republic came out on top after a multi-round tender process, chiefly thanks to many years of experience with Cummins Power Generation generator sets, and also thanks to its high level of service in both equipment installation and after-sales support. The generator sets were installed in custom-made containers measuring 12 x 2.6 x 3.5 metres. The containers were built in cooperation with Cummins Power Generation in Poland, and their height meant specialised transport was necessary to bring them to the assembly site.

Lebanese American UniversityThe Lebanese American University is relying on Cummins Power Generation for self generation of power at its campus near Byblos, Lebanon. The first phase of the project involves a pair of Cummins Power Generation generator sets, expected to operate 3,000 hours a year, to power the Medical and Nursing school. Phase 2 of the project will add self-generation capability to serve the entire 20,000 m2 university.

All work is being undertaken by Cummins Middle East FZE, Lebanon branch, with Associated Consulting Engineers in a consultancy role and DG Jones handling project management. Cummins Power Generation C1675 D5 and C1100 D5 generator sets have been installed, using KTA50-G8 and QST30-G4 engines. Phase 1 of the project has a total power requirement of 2.4 MVA, rising to 9 MVA in Phase 2. Cummins Middle East won the contract by being able to offer lower fuel consumption and a shorter lead time.

A special requirement was for containerised generator sets that would run quietly to achieve the required sound level of 68 dba at 1 metre. To meet the specified emissions restrictions, Cummins Middle East added a catalytic converter to the system. A load management relay was also installed, since in Phase 2 a Cummins DMC 200 management controller will be required to control the operation and distribution of the loads. The load management relay has been embedded into the Building Management System.

Cummins Power Generation is continuing its strong growth in Africa. The latest evidence is the sale of 124 C17D5T generator sets to provide standby and prime power for Telecel, the second-largest mobile phone network in Zimbabwe, with more than 1,200,000 active subscribers. An additional 35 generator sets will be provided later.

The customer for this significant order is Huawei, the second-largest supplier of telecom infrastructure equipment in the world. Cummins Power Generation is a partner with Huawei and recently won a Key Supplier Award from that company for its work in Africa. The longstanding relationship with Huawei was a key factor in the sale.

The generator sets will supplement the sometimes-unreliable power from the grid for the towers, or base transceiver stations, of the network. The towers will be located in both the northern and southern areas of the country, including the Bulawayo and Harare districts and Manicaland Province. Both Cummins South Africa and Cummins Zimbabwe will provide ongoing service and support.

CoreSite’s colocation (COLO) data center adjacent to the Chicago Board of Trade serves over 80 customers, including Tier 1 ISPs, financial trading firms, content delivery networks, cloud computing providers, and system integrators. The company decided to replace its old backup power system with a new, more powerful system from Cummins Power Generation. Meeting CoreSite’s requirements posed a series of design and logistical challenges that put Cummins to the test.

First, the old 6 MW system had to be removed and the new 8 MW Cummins system installed, on a seventh-story rooftop. Among other things, that meant closing busy streets in the downtown Loop. Another challenge was how to fit four 2-MW generator sets plus a DMC 200 paralleling system in the limited roof space available. A third challenge involved provisioning temporary backup power during the transition. And fourth, the entire project had to be completed on a tight lead time.

Read a new case history that tells how it was all accomplished — ahead of schedule.
