Data centre in Slovakia opts for Cummins Power Generation solution
Cummins Czech Republic has provided a standby power solution to the DataCube data centre – the largest and most modern data centre in Slovakia, and probably in all of central Europe. The newly opened 6,700 m2 data centre meets National Security Authority safety class 3, and exceeds European Tier III+ environmental standards.
Cummins Czech Republic came out on top after a multi-round tender process, chiefly thanks to many years of experience with Cummins Power Generation generator sets, and also thanks to its high level of service in both equipment installation and after-sales support. The generator sets were installed in custom-made containers measuring 12 x 2.6 x 3.5 metres. The containers were built in cooperation with Cummins Power Generation in Poland, and their height meant specialised transport was necessary to bring them to the assembly site.

Connect with Cummins Power Generation at CTIA in New Orleans
CTIA is one of the great get-togethers of the global telecom industry. This year, it takes place May 8–10 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. We’ll be there too, showcasing our range of prime and standby generator sets for the telecom industry. This year’s event is expected to attract some 40,000 attendees from across the world. At Booth 5268, visitors will be able to take a close-up look at our new C17D5T generator set and learn what it has to offer for mobile operators now and in the coming years.
This generator set is a powerful addition to our family of products, ideal for mobile telecommunications in fast-growing developing markets. The new diesel-engine generator set features an integrated automatic transfer switch, a large fuel tank and long intervals between services, allied to a heavy-duty engine and integral radiator cooling system. The C17D5T is well suited to the needs of mobile operators reaching new subscribers in remote areas — who are expected to account for the bulk of the “next billion” mobile connections, according to research by leading analyst firm Ovum. Power provision is vital to base station sites servicing the widespread rural locations where these potential new subscribers live. A prime-power source such as the Cummins Power Generation C17D5T will help operators install base stations reliably and efficiently. The generator set operates at 50 Hz and has single phase and 3-phase ratings of 17 kVA standby, 15 kVA prime. The unit has a rugged four-cycle industrial engine that features low emissions and a fast response to load changes. Cooling is provided by a standard integral radiator system, designed and tested for rated ambient temperatures — making it simpler to design generator sets installations to meet requirements for rejected heat. Control is through our PowerCommand® 1.1, which provides total generator set system integration, including automatic remote starting and stopping, plus alarms and status message display. The C17D5T generator set is equipped with an integrated automatic transfer switch and a 1,000-liter fuel tank. It can run for 1,000 hours between servicing, including lube oil and air filter changes. The weather-protected, sound-attenuated enclosure, coupled with robust structural strength and pilferage-protected lockable fuel tank, make the C17D5T a practical and efficient choice for remote areas in developing regions. The growth in requirement for prime power is a key trend in the telecom industry today, and our C17D5T generator set is an excellent prime power solution. It is ideal for environments in Asia, Africa, Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe and Latin America where telecom operators see their best mobile growth prospects. Mobile base stations in these regions are often far from a dependable grid. The integrated ATS makes for easy installation and reduces installation time significantly. The quality and reliability of the diesel generator sets in these locations are critical. In addition, Cummins offers the 60-Hz DSFA and DGHC range of generator sets specifically designed for the North American telecom market. These generator sets have high-capacity fuel tanks providing 48-hour autonomy, remote diagnostic capabilities, in-housing battery charger and block heaters. The weather-protected, sound-attenuated enclosures, coupled with robust structural strength, make them an optimum choice for telecom operators in North America who demand reliability in standby applications. The DSFA models use the four-cylinder QSB5 engine platform, with a 4.5-liter displacement. The DGHC models use the B3.3 engine platform with a 3.3-liter displacement. The C17D5T, DSFA and DGHC series are the latest members of Cummins Power Generation products that meet both the prime and standby requirements of telecommunications operators. The complete range covers 8–3,500 kVA for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz markets. These generator sets are suited to a variety of applications including cell towers, data centers and complex switching environments. So, as you can see, we’ll have plenty to discuss when you stop by Booth 5268 to say hello. We’re really looking forward to finding out how we can help meet your telecom needs, now and in the future. See you in the Big Easy!

Cummins Power Generation distributor provides standby power to cable landing station in Oman
Universal Engineering Services LLC (UES), Cummins Power Generation’s distributor in Oman, has installed a standby power solution for a submarine cable landing station. The work was part of a project carried out by local companies Qtel and Nawras, Indian company TATA and a number of Gulf Cooperation Council telecommunications companies. The landing point for the cable is in Qalhat, north of Sur.
UES has installed two Cummins Power Generation C700 D5 generator sets to provide 1100 kVA of standby power in the event of a grid outage, anticipated to occur on average one or two times a month. The two generator sets are synchronised to operate in parallel, and are supplied in enclosures since they are sited outdoors.
Oman is the landing point for an increasing number of submarine telecommunications cables. TATA is heavily involved in building a state-of-the-art communications network linking its home country of India with sites around the Middle East.

Cummins Power Generation to supply power for cell towers in Zimbabwe
Cummins Power Generation is continuing its strong growth in Africa. The latest evidence is the sale of 124 C17D5T generator sets to provide standby and prime power for Telecel, The customer for this significant order is Huawei, the second-largest supplier of telecom infrastructure equipment in the world. Cummins Power Generation is a partner with Huawei and recently won a Key Supplier Award from that company for its work in Africa. The longstanding relationship with Huawei was a key factor in the sale. The generator sets will supplement the sometimes-unreliable power from the grid for the towers, or base transceiver stations, of the network. The towers will be located in both the northern and southern areas of the country, including the Bulawayo and Harare districts and Manicaland Province. Both Cummins South Africa and Cummins Zimbabwe will provide ongoing service and support.

Cummins Power Generation scales logistical and physical heights for N+1 data center installation in heart of Chicago
CoreSite’s colocation (COLO) data center adjacent to the Chicago Board of Trade serves over 80 customers, including Tier 1 ISPs, financial trading firms, content delivery networks, cloud computing providers, and system integrators. The company decided to replace its old backup power system with a new, more powerful system from Cummins Power Generation. Meeting CoreSite’s requirements posed a series of design and logistical challenges that put Cummins to the test. First, the old 6 MW system had to be removed and the new 8 MW Cummins system installed, on a seventh-story rooftop. Among other things, that meant closing busy streets in the downtown Loop. Another challenge was how to fit four 2-MW generator sets plus a DMC 200 paralleling system in the limited roof space available. A third challenge involved provisioning temporary backup power during the transition. And fourth, the entire project had to be completed on a tight lead time. Read a new case history that tells how it was all accomplished — ahead of schedule.
