7×24 Exchange Spring Conference: Cummins Power Generation a gold sponsor and vendor presenter
The theme of the spring conference is “End-to-End Reliability: Thought Leadership.” Ken Box, P.E., Territory Manager for Power Systems, will be presenting at the Vendor Knowledge Exchange, the portion of the conference where Ken’s presentation will focus on Cummins solutions for meeting the EPA’s Tier 4 emissions regulations covering stationary power generation equipment. Under the current regulations, most new diesel power generation systems must be EPA-certified as capable of meeting the Tier 4 Interim emissions performance standards. Cummins Power Generation is one of only a handful of companies capable of meeting these requirements. We look forward to seeing you in Orlando. To learn more about the conference, click here.

Successful Cummins automation upgrade to aging Utah pediatric hospital cogeneration plant
Primary Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) can boast a century of excellence in pediatric care and recognition as one of the best children’s hospitals in the country. But an aging cogeneration power plant meant high maintenance costs. A new case history documents how technical and space constraints were overcome with a new, more reliable and more automated system. The hospital wanted a more hands-free, lower-maintenance system that could handle all or almost all of its loads, not just essential equipment. And they wanted to keep a generator set from another supplier that was added several years ago but required a lot of manual intervention in the event of a power outage. The solution provided by Cummins Power Generation and Cummins Rocky Mountain overcame the technical issue of a different winding pitch on the non-Cummins generator set, as well as extremely tight space limitations. Click here to find out how the challenges were solved.

Innovative Cummins power solution at Oregon State Hospital
A new case history tells the story of a partnership that overcame a number of challenges and resulted in an innovative power solution for the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, the primary adult psychiatric center for the state. The entire campus is on the National Register of Historic Places, and includes some 19th century brick and stone buildings. But, previous updates to the physical plant had left a less-than-ideal power configuration. The solution meant signing up for the Dispatchable Standby Generation (DSG) program of Portland General Electric (PGE). Under this program, the utility contributes to the capital cost of the standby installation and assumes responsibility for its maintenance. In return, PGE can use some of the electricity produced; up to a specified number of hours per year. Participating in the program introduced a new set of requirements, which required the close collaboration of the hospital facility staff, the electrical and general contractors, the local distributor Cummins Northwest and Cummins Power Generation. Cummins Power Generation in year-end issue of Distributed Energy
A photograph of the Cummins installation at Delta Dental of Michigan headquarters is featured on the cover. In addition, an article on “Commercial Scale DE” describes the research under way at the University of North Dakota’s Energy and Environmental Research Center. The center is helping Cummins Power Generation develop ways to handle “challenging fuel stocks” such as railroad ties. The feature story about “Mandatory Maintenance” includes a photo of a 100 kW Cummins generator set and several quotes from Ani Natekar, Cummins Sales Application Engineer. Natekar points out how changing business requirements for backup power have made quicker start times a must, and he stresses the importance of regular testing and maintenance. He also discusses how to reduce generator set noise: “The easiest way for companies to address noise issues is for them to buy a complete genset package from a manufacturer that already includes noise-deadening equipment… This way, end users won’t have to deal with the issue on their own.” You can find the November–December issue of Distributed Energy here

Fast-expanding Pamplona hospital relies on Cummins Power Generation for standby power
Cummins Power Generation Spanish distributor CPG Madrid has supplied the first of three generator sets to the Virgen del Camino Hospital in Pamplona, northern Spain. The C2250 D5 generator set will provide standby power for all the hospital’s buildings in the event of a grid failure. The total grid supply requirement of the site is 6,700 kW.
The 566-bedroom hospital is undergoing development under a €23.7 million modernisation programme funded by the Navarra regional government. This will include a new operating theatre, intensive care unit, post-operative recovery room and laboratories. The project will involve construction of a new 6,000 m2 building. The hospital is located in the city centre, close to the venue for Pamplona’s most famous event – the annual Running of the Bulls, where people attempt to out-race a bull released into the city streets. Some injuries can result. However, the prime reason for the hospital expansion is less dramatic – to serve the medical needs of Pamplona’s 200,000 population all year round.

New case history details role of Cummins Power Generation in hospital’s award-winning upgrade
In Anderson, South Carolina, the 1940s-era AnMed Health Medical Center had been showing its age. Hospital management saw the need for a major upgrade to the entire electrical infrastructure, in order to improve reliability and meet current code requirements. This large-scale project, carried out while the hospital remained in operation, was recognized with a national VISTA Award for Infrastructure. A new case history documents the key role played by Cummins Power Generation. ![]() The PowerCommand® generator sets and control equipment installed in the basement of AnMed Health Medical Center. The complex project called for exceptional teamwork and cooperation among several organizations, including the architects, the engineering firm and the electrical contractor, as well as Cummins Power Generation and the local distributor, Cummins Atlantic. As one participant noted, “It was a total team effort.” The success of the project can be measured not only in the satisfaction of the facility managers at the hospital, but also in the VISTA Award for Infrastructure, presented by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE). The award was presented to AnMed at a national ASHE conference in March 2011. The case history is available here. |

Cummins Power Generation provides 1 MW of prime power to Selin Hospital in Iraq
Cummins distributor Modern Iraq Company for Trading Agencies (MICTA) has completed the installation of a 1 MW prime power solution for Selin Hospital near Erbil in the north of Iraq. The 50-patient hospital required special consideration for air quality and noise, and found the solution in a pair of Cummins Power Generation enclosed C550 D5e generator sets.
The hospital chose Cummins because of the reliability of its product, the availability of service support and parts and its competitive prices, plus the cover warranty provided by the distributor. MICTA was responsible for the whole project from supply and installation through to commissioning of the power station and after-sales service and support. |
