ambatovyCummins Africa, Power Generation is providing power to the Ambatovy Project, a nickel-cobalt mining and processing project in Madagascar. The project was running out of prime power, and the extra power needed is being provided by 30 1000 kW Cummins Power Generation C1250 D2R generator sets using KTA50-G3 engines. The total order, valued at US$15 million, will be installed at the site to begin providing the much needed extra power by late November 2011.

The Ambatovy Project is a large-tonnage nickel and cobalt project with annual production capacity estimated at 60,000 tons of nickel, 5,600 tons of cobalt and approximately 190,000 tons of ammonium sulphate. The project has an estimated project life of 27 years, and is positioned to be the world’s biggest lateritic nickel mine by 2013. It represents the country’s largest capital spend to date.

The C1250 D2R generator sets will provide 30 MW of power and will run 24/7, synchronising with the local grid and existing generator sets for load management and peak sharing. They will operate from two plants, each supplying 15 MW, comprising 15 C1250 D2R units for prime power, 15 0.4 kV/11 kV step-up transformers, two 20ft containerised MV cells including DMC300s and MV switchgear, and two 60,000 litre self-bunded bulk fuel tanks.

The customer initially considered renting the required equipment, but saw the value in purchasing the KTA50-G3 powered, rental-spec generator sets thanks to their durability and reputation for operating in harsh conditions. Cummins support, service and its commitment to delivering and setting up in a short time frame were also key factors in the decision.

Petrominerales is a strongly represented company in Colombia, considered the leader in the local petroleum and gas exploitation sector. The company arrived in the region in 2002 because it considered changes in government favorable to investment, stimulating the country’s growth.

Since it set up in the country, it has maintained a loyal partnership with Cummins Power and its local distributor, Trienergy. They worked together last year on the supply of 12 model DQKC 2000kW Cummins Generator Sets, which were installed in the operations area. For this reason, already trusting Cummins energy, Petrominerales is working on a new project with Trienergy.

This project consists of another 4 model DQKC 2000kW Cummins Generator Sets to be delivered in April 2011 with Prime Power mode installation and application for use in the oil and gas sector. The customer is calm and confident about the project because it is well aware Cummins Power Generation products’ competitiveness, and the full availability and quality of the distributor, which are determining factors for the best results.

New prime power case history on Jaguar Mine

The discovery of gold in Kalgoorlie by Paddy Hannan in 1893 led to one of Australia’s great gold rushes. Today, the Kalgoorlie region in Western Australia is still an important mining center. One of the newer players in the area is Jabiru Metals — an Australian base metals company — and one of its major operations is Jaguar Mine.

The company had to provide power for the mine, but the prospect of relying exclusively on diesel fuel was not attractive because of the cost. Indeed, with diesel fuel costs soaring, Jabiru Metals knew it instead wanted to take advantage of the relatively low cost of natural gas and use gas-powered generator sets for its prime power requirements.

The company decided that the best technical and commercial solution came from Cummins Power Generation’s Energy Solutions Business. “Our research showed that Cummins had a very good reputation in terms of gas generator sets,” said Victoria Twiss, a key member of Jabiru Metals’ project management team on the Jaguar project. “We needed to be assured of generator reliability because of the mine’s remote location and the production targets that have to be met.”

The mine’s four QSV911 gas generator sets are powered by lean-burn, spark-ignited Cummins gas engines — 91-liter, V18 units with turbocharging and aftercooling. The generator sets are maintained under a contract managed by Cummins Kalgoorlie and Cummins Perth.

Powering gold and silver mining on a large scale in the Andes

Barrick Gold Corporation, in cooperation with Companhia Mineradora Nevada, chose Cummins Power Generation products to provide prime power for a landmark gold and silver mining operation called Pascua Lama. Straddling the Andes Mountains, the project is expected to yield 750,000 ounces of gold and 30 million ounces of silver annually.

The Pascua Lama project is the first of its kind to span two countries: Chile and Argentina. Given the remote  location and 3,000-meter-high elevation in the Andes Mountains, the firm elected to install a self-contained, modular energy plant. The project, designed by Cummins Power Generation of Chile, includes two synchronized 545 DQCA generators, DMC power electronics for load control, a certified fuel system with a 13-cubic-meter tank, plus engineering and assembly. Operations were scheduled to start in June.

The company management chose Cummins because of its superior technical proposal, a differentiated modular design, and superior fuel consumption economies.
