Cummins Power Generation completes power station for Shell Oil Company site in Iraq

Majnoon Oil Field

Cummins Power Generation’s distributor Modern Iraq Company for Trading Agencies (MICTA) has installed and commissioned a new power station for Shell Oil Company in Iraq. The 1.2 MW power station serves an encampment of 200 Shell Oil staff at its Majnoon Oilfield 75 km from Basra in the south of the country.

MICTA has supplied three C550 D5e S generator sets, plus LV switchgear, DMC1000 management and control, and a fuel system. The generator sets operate automatically and are configured in parallel. When designing the installation, MICTA paid special attention to air ventilation because the equipment is operating in a desert area. Noise level was also a consideration as the camp is residential. MICTA won the order partly because of product reliability, after-sales support and warranty coverage.

Shell Oil Company became a Cummins Power Generation customer in Iraq in 2008, and MICTA had already provided two installations for them. A further 1.2 MW power station is planned at the Majnoon Oilfield site in the near future. MICTA has also recently supplied prime power at BP’s Rumaila Oilfield staff encampment in the same part of the country, and will shortly start on phase two of a 5 MW power station project there.

EIM (Egyptian International Motors), the Cummins Power Generation distributor for Egypt, staged a special seminar recently at the Nasr City headquarters of Petrobel, one of Egypt’s largest petroleum sector companies. A dozen key Petrobel personnel attended to hear presentations from EIM Petroleum Department Head Mohamed El Akkad, Senior Sales Engineer, Petroleum Sector Ahmed Samir and Technical Office Manager Amr El Serwy.

Petrobel meets CumminsThe opening presentation introduced EIM and its relationship with Cummins Power Generation, highlighting EIM’s growth in recent years and its capabilities in the Egyptian market. An introduction to Cummins Power Generation followed, profiling Cummins manufacturing strengths and the advantages of its product line. The session was brought to a conclusion by a presentation on controllers, focusing on the advantages of PCC controllers, master controllers and Cummins paralleling systems.

In addition to a number of field engineers, several of Petrobel’s heavyweight decision makers also attended, including the Purchasing & Materials Manager, Service Analysts and the Maintenance Manager. Follow up from the meeting has been positive, and the first formal service enquiry from Petrobel has now been received.

Petrobel is a significant contact for EIM since it is partly owned by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, which is the country’s state-owned petroleum company involved in exploration, development and oil and gas fields as well as being a producer of oil, gas and condensates. The Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation jointly owns Petrobel with Italy’s Agip/ENI.

Cummins Power Generation completes power station for BP oil workers in Iraq

Cummins Power Generation has completed a 5 MW power station providing prime power to BP oilfield workers in Iraq. Five Cummins Power Generation generator sets are serving an encampment of 1,500-2,000 BP employees working in the Rumaila Oilfield 70km from Basra in the south of the country.

The power station is built around five C1400 D5 generator sets, equipped with Cummins KTA50 engines, which work in parallel configuration and are controlled by a DMC200-5 master controller. Power system operation is automatic. Installation paid particular attention to noise level and emissions quality. The power station came into operation in mid-March.

The project was handled by Cummins Power Generation distributor MICTA, the Modern Iraq Company for Trading Agencies. BP has been a regular customer of MICTA and Cummins Power Generation since 2007, with three previous installations completed. As one of the world’s largest oil companies, BP represents a considerable opportunity for future business.

Rumaila Oilfield is currently the fourth largest in the world, accounting for around 15% of Iraq’s oil reserves. Approximately 200 oil wells produce around one million barrels a day, 40% of Iraq’s oil production. Rumaila is on course to become the world’s second largest oilfield as the two operators contracted by the Iraqi government to run it – BP and China National Oil Corporation – increase production to closer to 3 million barrels a day in the coming years.

3MVA Power Station Comissioned in Iraq by Cummins Power Generation Distributor

Cummins Power Generation’s Distributor in Iraq, ‘Modern Iraq Company for Trading Agencies’ and their application engineering staff successfully completed the installation and Commissioning of a 3MVA power station in Halfaya Oilfield Camp; 35 Km away from Missan in South of Iraq, for Petro China Oil Company. The site, large enough to deliver power to 200 caravans, roughly 300 people, is fed from three C1100D5 generating sets with a DMC1000 dedicated microprocessor-based controller to provide supervisory and power transfer to the three C1100D5 units.

The client, Petro China, is one of the biggest Oil Companies in China. In November 2009, BP and its partner Petro China entered into a 20 year technical service contract with the South Oil Company of Iraq, under which the consortium was required to nearly triple output from the field to 2.85 million barrels of oil per day over the next six years.

The client required a system that will operate in extreme temperature ranges and arid conditions as the prime source of power to the camp. An on-site inspection by Cummins recommended three C1100D5 generator sets to deliver the necessary 3MVA to ensure both power and environmental considerations for air quality and noise level were met.

To offer maximum stability and continued delivery of operation from the generator sets, a low voltage switchgear was installed to give electrical protection and isolation of exposure to over and under voltage.

The application engineering staff of Cummins Power Generation’s distributor, ‘Modern Iraq Company for Trading Agencies’ are also providing on-site training courses to make sure that all staff working with the units are fully conversant with the operational functions and servicing requirements to maintain power output to the site.

Once again, Petrominerales relies on the quality of Cummins Generator Sets’ energy.

Petrominerales is a strongly represented company in Colombia, considered the leader in the local petroleum and gas exploitation sector. The company arrived in the region in 2002 because it considered changes in government favorable to investment, stimulating the country’s growth.

Since it set up in the country, it has maintained a loyal partnership with Cummins Power and its local distributor, Trienergy. They worked together last year on the supply of 12 model DQKC 2000kW Cummins Generator Sets, which were installed in the operations area. For this reason, already trusting Cummins energy, Petrominerales is working on a new project with Trienergy.

This project consists of another 4 model DQKC 2000kW Cummins Generator Sets to be delivered in April 2011 with Prime Power mode installation and application for use in the oil and gas sector. The customer is calm and confident about the project because it is well aware Cummins Power Generation products’ competitiveness, and the full availability and quality of the distributor, which are determining factors for the best results.
