Cummins Power Generation to be at WEFTEC in Los Angeles
The annual WEFTEC conference, sponsored by the Water Environment Federation (WEF), takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center October 15–19. The annual conference is the premier event for water quality professionals, with 27 workshops and 114 technical sessions planned for this year. About 18,000 attendees and 900 exhibitors are expected. Cummins Power Generation will be on hand at Booth 8119 in Kentia Hall to discuss on-site power for freshwater and wastewater applications. If you plan on attending the conference, please stop by our booth and say hello. We always want to hear about your on-site power needs and explore how Cummins Power Generation can help you meet those requirements.

Cummins Power Generation rental power provides key to delicate repair at giant Bonneville Dam hydro facility
![]() Photo credit: James Butler. A large trailerized rental power generator set is dwarfed by the hydro-power facility at the Bonneville Dam. The Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River in Oregon uses 18 hydro-generators to produce over one gigawatt (one billion watts) of electricity for the Portland metropolitan area. When one of those enormous hydro-generators needed a repair, Cummins Northwest answered the call to provide 1 MW of rental power to get the job done. One of the hydro-generators had a 200-ton, 30-foot-wide armature that needed to be expanded slightly — by 40 thousandths of an inch, to be exact. This expansion was accomplished by placing 16 heaters at precise points inside the armature ring. The Cummins generator provided the power for the heaters to run for several hours on multiple occasions. With the armature expanded, shims were placed inside it to make the slight expansion permanent. The work was completed without a hitch, and — equally important — the lights in Portland never blinked.

Cummins Power Generation featured in WaterWorld article
The December 2010 issue of WaterWorld has an article about the on-site power system that supports the cities of Ajax and Pickering, Ontario, part of Greater Toronto. The Ajax plant requires approximately 2 megawatts (MW) of continuous power during peak water demand to supply the 150,000 customers it serves. Emergency standby power to meet that demand when utility power fails is provided by a system from Cummins Power Generation that comprises three generator sets, automatic transfer switches and paralleling switchgear. WaterWorld is a news and technology source serving engineers, managers and consultants in the Water/Wastewater industry worldwide. The article, “On-Site Power Generation Protects Water Supply at Ontario Utility,” is available here.

Salt of the earth: a new case study on DCathlon® DC generators and desalination
Reverse osmosis (RO) desalination offers a solution to the widespread problem of inadequate supplies of freshwater. A new case study details how DCathlon DC generators are doing their part at the largest inland desalination plant in the world, near El Paso, Texas. The plant takes previously unusable brackish groundwater and produces potable water. But because the plant is far from the ocean, there is the problem of how to dispose of the saline concentrate by-product left from the RO process. One solution: inject the concentrate deep into wells dug for that purpose. The concentrate is injected into three wells located in a remote area — far from utility lines — near Fort Bliss. Because of their remote location, solar panels provide the primary power for the wells’ operation. DCathlon DC generators provide reliable backup power when the DC power system is depleted to preset levels. The case study can be accessed here.
