Cummins Power Generation Stands Up To Citywide Power Down In South Korea
Cummins Sales and Service Korea (CSSK), South Korean’s distributor for Cummins Power Generation immediately mobilized resources to provide action and support to their affected customers, whose facilities were supported with backup power from Cummins gensets, thereby minimizing operational downtime and equipment damages. This was the country’s worst-ever power outage, affecting more than 1.6 million households, of which 400,000 were from Seoul. Although no deaths were reported, widespread panic and chaos resulted from failed traffic lights causing massive jams, people trapped in lifts, and hundreds of factories halted production. Situations became life threatening for hospital patients, where medical equipment was direly affected. Fortunately, companies and plants supported with backup power like those from Cummins power systems were quick to avert operational downtime and equipment damages. CSSK’s speedy coping of the emergency once again validates Cummins’ capabilities and longstanding reputation of providing quality, reliable power solutions when the need arises. “Cummins generators can be trusted in times of need to deliver effective emergency power; as a result of the fast response, damages to our plant are prevented,” commented one of Cummins Power Generation customers.

Diesel Progress covers Cummins Power Generation Acoustical Testing Center with in-depth profile
Our new Acoustical Testing Center (ATC) is “making more noise”—pun intended. The interior of the hemi-anechoic testing chamber is featured on the cover of the November issue of the North American edition of Diesel Progress, a leading trade publication. An in-depth article follows inside. Written by Mike Brezonick, Associate Publisher, the article includes additional photos of the building and describes the ATC and its purpose. Brezonick notes the increase in noise regulations for generator sets around the world, and how Cummins Power Generation is working to meet that challenge and gain a competitive advantage with the development of quieter power systems. Martin Myers, the Director of Global Applied Technology for Cummins Power Generation was interviewed for the article. He comments on the patented, sound-absorbing wedges; the advantages of precisely controlled indoor testing; and the mix of performance testing, development work, and technology development projects that the ATC will handle. The article concludes with a quote from Myers: “We have a whole range of things planned out to be doing in this building, which would not have been done or could not have been done to the same level that we’re going to be able to do. It’s a huge competitive advantage to be able to do this kind of work at this level of integrity. The building is capable of running 24/7, so I think there’s a lot of opportunity.” |
New Cummins Power Generation white paper on matching technology to emission standards
Cummins has issued a white paper on the EPA emission standards that took effect in 2011 and how they affect emergency standby power systems. The white paper, by Gary Johansen, Executive Director of Worldwide Engineering, reviews the evolution of emission standards, discusses the different requirements for standby power and examines various options to meet the new Tier 4 standards. The white paper explains that choosing the appropriate emergency standby power system depends on the particular application. For example, if an organization desires to run its generator sets for longer than the strict limits allowed for emergency standby power, then a T4-compliant system should be considered. The paper also explores how Cummins is combining its proven in-cylinder technologies with new aftertreatment innovations for a solution that meets or exceeds the Tier 4 standards. The white paper is available here.

Corporate responsibility efforts in action at Cummins Power Generation leadership conference
More than 200 Cummins Power Generation managers and directors recently attended a global leadership conference hosted by Cummins in St. Paul, MN. Part of the multi-day conference was devoted to learning about various needs around the world and the many different activities in which our Community Involvement Teams participate to respond to both local and global needs. A number of people tied fleece blankets; some 75 blankets were assembled and donated to People Serving People, a homeless shelter in Minneapolis. A second initiative involved the Assistive Technology Lab at the Courage Center, a Minnesota-based organization that provides many therapeutic, vocational and other services for the disabled. Over the years many Cummins employees have volunteered their time and skills at Courage Center. This time, the leadership volunteers adapted 23 toys and other gifts for use by the disabled.
All three projects demonstrate how Cummins Power Generation managers and directors are leading by example when it comes to corporate responsibility. “It was fantastic to be able to communicate through pictures, art and hands-on activities the incredible work being done by the Community Involvement Teams globally,” said Diane Peterson, Corporate Responsibility Leader. “Seeing the global teams, as well as the projects they are doing, really demonstrates the impact our employees are having, as well as the expertise and enthusiasm they are bringing to our community partners.” But the leadership conference attendees didn’t stop there. More than just hearing about projects, many of the leaders joined in various volunteer activities that took place during the conference.

Cummins named to Dow Jones Sustainability List for seventh consecutive year
The Dow Jones Sustainability World Index recognizes the top 10 percent of the world’s largest public companies for their economic, social and environmental performance. Cummins has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for a seventh consecutive year. “We worked to create a cleaner and healthier environment, to build stronger communities and to create the right work environment where the diversity of our employees fuels the innovation our customers count on,” Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tim Solso said of 2010–2011 in the company’s most recent Sustainability Report. Dow Jones works with SAM, an investment firm focused exclusively on sustainability-related investing, to create the index, which includes 342 companies in its World Index across 57 industry sectors. Cummins was among just 10 U.S. companies in the sector of industrial goods and services to make the index and one of just two U.S.-based companies named a sustainability leader in the industrial engineering sector. The company was named to the North America Index for a fifth consecutive year. Companies are assessed on their performance in areas such as corporate governance, risk management, climate change strategy, environmental management as well as eco-efficiency, labor practices, corporate citizenship, philanthropy, employee development and supply chain standards. More than a dozen Cummins employees joined forces to answer Dow Jones’s questions. Special thanks go out to them for completing this task in addition to their other responsibilities.
