Cummins Onan presented two well-received seminars on marine generator vibration at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) last fall in Amsterdam, one of the premier events in the recreational marine industry. If you weren’t able to attend, or if you did attend and would like to see the seminars again, you’re in luck.

Professional-quality video recordings of the seminars are now available on PowerSource, our engineering web portal. Just go to Cummins PowerSource and log in. Then click on the Marine tab, and then under Tools, click on the Basic or Advanced seminar video. If you don’t already have a PowerSource account, it’s simple to register and create one, absolutely free.

The presenter of the seminars is Steve Seidlitz, a Senior Technical Advisor at Cummins Onan with 40 years of experience in the design and development of low-vibration machines. The basic seminar covers fundamental topics and is aimed at marine engineers with fewer than five years’ experience. The advanced seminar is directed toward more experienced marine engineers.

And while you’re on our PowerSource Website, we invite you to check out our other resources for marine engineers & naval architects — CAD files, spec sheets, news, online forums and more.

Cummins Power Generation’s Japanese counterpart, Cummins Japan recently organized its first ever PowerGen OEM Seminar.

Held on the 27th October 2010, the meeting was attended by over 30 participants, including clients and partners.

Mr Ken Hanawa launched the meeting with an opening address, followed by various speakers taking the stand to speak on topics covering latest Powergen products and technologies, updates on Cummins Inc, Cummins Japan as well as on Service and Parts.

This Power Generation OEM seminar was held following the recent partnership between Cummins Japan and Tokyo Electrical Co Ltd (TDS), announced in September 2011.

TDS commissioned the provision and installation of 29 emissionized Cummins engines in the 15-1250 kVA range in May. These G-Drive engines are designated as standby units, but are also rated as prime power support.

Following this, Cummins Japan anticipates a regular annual order of 25-30 engines from the client.

Cummins Onan at METS: record attendance, busy booth, well-received seminars

The Marine Equipment Trade Show, or METS, was held in Amsterdam November 15–17, and it broke last year’s attendance record by 2%. Cummins Onan participated in this largest trade show for boats and marine equipment. We hosted lots of activity in our booth and had a good turnout for our two seminars on the important topic of reducing vibration in marine generators.

Vibration has long been one of the key issues challenging the marine industry. Cummins Onan has relentlessly devoted decades of design and optimization to manufacture the quietest generator sets with the least vibration. Both of our seminars on reducing vibration — one basic and one advanced — were led by Steve Seidlitz, a senior technical advisor at Cummins Power Generation with 39 years of industry experience. Steve is an expert in mechanical dynamics related to vibration control.

The basic seminar dealt with fundamental concepts and terms, covering these topics:

• Why We Care About Excessive Vibration
• Mechanical Dynamics
• Frequency Domain and Why Working in It Is Very Important
• Resonances
• Engine Order and Excitation
• Place to Go for Continuing Education

The advanced seminar delved into the following:

• Mounting System Design
• Importance of the Generator Set’s Supporting Structure
• Taking Vibration Measurements
• What These Measurements Tell Us
• The Problem with Using Overall Vibration Levels

Steve will be using information he presented in the seminars as the basis for a white paper on vibration that will be published in 2012. We’ll let you know when it’s available, so stay tuned!

Cummins Onan to present seminars on reducing marine generator vibration at METS Conference in Amsterdam – Part of international expansion of marine business

0

Cummins Onan will have one of its most experienced engineers present two seminars on reducing vibration in marine generators. The seminars will take place at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS), to be held in Amsterdam November 15–17. Cummins Onan will also be an exhibitor at the event, at Stand 11.605.

There will be two seminars on reducing vibration, one basic and one advanced. Both the seminars will be held in Room G103 on November 16.

The seminars will be led by Steve Seidlitz, a senior technical advisor at Cummins Power Generation with 39 years of industry experience and a specialist in mechanical dynamics related to vibration control. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from Grinnell College and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

“Our seminars at METS on reducing vibration not only demonstrate our technology leadership in this important area and a desire to remain close to our European customers; they are also more proof of how Cummins Onan is aggressively pursuing a strategy of international growth in the marine generator industry,” said Lucio Kroll, director of Cummins Onan Marine Business. “Other evidence of that strategy includes the creation of marine product literature in several languages; new relationships with European yacht builders; our strengthened partnership with Tritex in China; and our participation in the 2011 China International Boat Show in Shanghai. The growth of Cummins Onan’s business outside the U.S., particularly in emerging markets such as Brazil, China and India, not only mirrors similar growth by our parent company, Cummins Inc., but also is in tandem with the ambitious oversea expansion of our strategic customers, major boat builders in North America and Europe.”

The seminars are free for all METS attendees, but preregistration is required, as only a limited number of seats are available. To sign up, click here.
