Learn about our rigorous Cummins Onan marine generator testing

0
comments

To make it to final production, marine generators from Cummins Onan have to go through a series of exacting design steps and tests. This robust process is described in a new flyer available on our website.

Cummins Onan engineers start with analysis-led design (ALD) techniques to model generator components. With the designs optimized in a 3D CAD system, prototype units are built and then extensively tested.

Some tests take place in our new acoustical testing center, or ATC, on our Fridley, Minnesota campus. The ATC, the largest engine-testing facility of its kind in the world, enables Cummins engineers to precisely measure the sound output of generators, including with binaural recording to mimic human hearing.  Other tests, critical to understanding and reducing generator vibration, are conducted on shake tables.

All these design and testing steps are detailed in a new flyer that you can download here

Cummins Power Generation Earns EPA Tier 4 Interim Certification for 30–40 kW Generator Sets

more
comments

We’re announcing that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has certified three more models of generator sets as meeting the new Tier 4 Interim (T4i) emission-reduction standards. The certification covers generator set models producing 30–40 kW of electricity.

The EPA established a tiered system of emission standards in 2004. The final emissions tier will be implemented in two stages: Tier 4 Interim and Final Tier 4. Cummins Power Generation proudly provides EPA emissions-compliant products that conform to current standards. The standards mandate substantial reductions in several emissions, especially oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter. The standards cover diesel engines used on highway, off-road and stationary applications.

The newly certified Cummins Power Generation 30, 35 and 40 kW models are powered by a Cummins 3.3 liter engine and come standard with the PowerCommand® control system. An increased-capacity fuel tank and a factory-installed battery charger are among many of the optional features available to satisfy specific requirements.

Gene Schellhorn, Product Manager said, “Cummins Power Generation is pleased to have these products added to our growing list of T4i-certified systems. These 30, 35 and 40 kW generator sets can help many commercial property owners and small businesses weather power outages in comfort and safety, allowing business to continue operation uninterrupted.” Orders for the Cummins 30, 35 and 40 kW generator sets can be placed starting in April 2012.  Contact your local distributor or visit us at Cumminspower.com for pricing and availability.

Cummins Onan now in full production of new Commercial Mobile generators certified to EPA Tier 3

0
comments

Cummins Onan has launched full production of all Commercial Mobile generators in the HGJAD and HGJAE family that are certified to EPA Tier 3 regulations for small spark-ignited engines. The new Tier 3 regulations mandate lower emission levels for “Class 2″ engines.

The design changes are all internal. There is minimal impact on performance and no change at all to the fit, form and function. The most visible change is the color of the enclosures, which has changed from green to white. Purchasers of these generators should also review the mandated installation requirements.

Specification sheets for these new models are available through www.cumminsonan.com

Cummins Power Generation at Montana’s leading energy conference

0
comments

The Montana Energy Forum is a growing community of concerned citizens committed to two goals — achieving energy security for the United States and holding elected officials accountable for shaping sound energy policies. The forum believes in an “all of the above” approach to energy policy, including traditional energy sources (e.g., oil, natural gas, coal) as well as renewable energy sources and technologies. On April 3–4, the group will convene at Montana Energy 2012, the leading energy conference in the state.

The conference includes energy industry representatives, suppliers of goods and services, contractors, local government officials and economic development professionals. Cummins Rocky Mountain is proud to be an exhibitor at the event. A rental generator set model will be on display that has been especially popular within the oil and gas industry.

Larry Fetting, General Manager, Americas Rental Segment, will be on hand to support our regional Cummins distributor and meet with customers and other attendees. Oil and gas exploration is an important industry in the state, with substantially increased drilling activity in the Williston Basin in recent years. There are also several major coal mines in Montana. Reliable rental power is essential to many of these energy-supplying operations.

Please stop by and say hello if you are attending the event!

Tips from Cummins Onan for a top-quality spring RV tune-up

0
comments

It’s spring, when RVers’ fancy lightly turns to thoughts of — the open road. So it’s time to get your RV ready for this year’s adventures. That means routine maintenance for your RV generator as well as your RV engine.

Anybody can make an oil filter that “will fit,” but there’s no way to tell if it will work properly. Although the box may say the product meets minimum standards, what about the filter’s dirt-holding ability and integrity? Cummins Onan Green Label RV oil filters have valves that allow oil to bypass the oil filter during cold starts, or if the filter becomes plugged. The same kind of engineering goes into Cummins Onan Green Label air filters, spark plugs, and OnaMax oil.

You don’t have to settle for aftermarket “will-fit” parts. Genuine Green Label parts and OnaMax oil offer the durability and performance you’ve come to expect from Cummins Onan.

Simply click here to buy Cummins Onan Green Label parts or to find a dealer near you.

Cummins Onan at the Miami Boat Show: OEM partners and customers made for a very active event

0
comments

The Miami Boat Show, held February 16–20, was a very successful event for Cummins Onan on two key fronts—connecting with industry partners and connecting with customers.

Many of our OEM boat-building partners were on hand, including Brunswick, Sea Ray, Hatteras, Sunseeker, Beneteau, Riviera and Ferretti. This provided a great opportunity to together explore new opportunities and further strengthen relationships. It was exciting to see the new models our partners had on display and the interest they generated among buyers. Riviera, an Australian company, reported record sales during the show.

Cummins Onan enjoyed a great booth location and attracted plenty of traffic, with engineers and naval architects particularly well represented. The staff from dozens of Cummins Onan dealers welcomed many interested buyers from around the world, including attendees from Asia-Pacific as well as Central and Latin America.

Barry Stamm, Marine Sales Manager at Cummins Power South, was especially pleased with the strong sales in the booth, prompted in part by special pricing in effect for the show. He observed that a majority of customer inquiries at the show concerned repowers, replacing existing engines and generators. In addition, our knowledgeable application and service engineers expertly addressed a wide array of both technical and service questions from booth visitors.

Our many thanks to all of you who visited our booth and to all those who made the 2012 show such a success. See you in 2013!

Cummins Onan presented two well-received seminars on marine generator vibration at the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) last fall in Amsterdam, one of the premier events in the recreational marine industry. If you weren’t able to attend, or if you did attend and would like to see the seminars again, you’re in luck.

Professional-quality video recordings of the seminars are now available on PowerSource, our engineering web portal. Just go to Cummins PowerSource and log in. Then click on the Marine tab, and then under Tools, click on the Basic or Advanced seminar video. If you don’t already have a PowerSource account, it’s simple to register and create one, absolutely free.

The presenter of the seminars is Steve Seidlitz, a Senior Technical Advisor at Cummins Onan with 40 years of experience in the design and development of low-vibration machines. The basic seminar covers fundamental topics and is aimed at marine engineers with fewer than five years’ experience. The advanced seminar is directed toward more experienced marine engineers.

And while you’re on our PowerSource Website, we invite you to check out our other resources for marine engineers & naval architects — CAD files, spec sheets, news, online forums and more.
