Cummins Power Generation scales logistical and physical heights for N+1 data center installation in heart of Chicago

CoreSite’s colocation (COLO) data center adjacent to the Chicago Board of Trade serves over 80 customers, including Tier 1 ISPs, financial trading firms, content delivery networks, cloud computing providers, and system integrators. The company decided to replace its old backup power system with a new, more powerful system from Cummins Power Generation. Meeting CoreSite’s requirements posed a series of design and logistical challenges that put Cummins to the test.

First, the old 6 MW system had to be removed and the new 8 MW Cummins system installed, on a seventh-story rooftop. Among other things, that meant closing busy streets in the downtown Loop. Another challenge was how to fit four 2-MW generator sets plus a DMC 200 paralleling system in the limited roof space available. A third challenge involved provisioning temporary backup power during the transition. And fourth, the entire project had to be completed on a tight lead time.

Read a new case history that tells how it was all accomplished — ahead of schedule.

The Likuliku Lagoon Resort is situated in the remote Mamanuca archipelago, and is Fiji’s most luxurious and exclusive island retreat, catering specially for discerning adult travelers.

The resort, though sitting amidst a tranquil setting, had a rather rocky start with its originally installed power supplies, which are non-Cummins sets.

The hospitality management encountered intermittent disruptions to guest service, frequent equipment breakdown and very often, unreliable power supplies in the day-to-day operations.

The situation immediately improved for the better when Cummins Power Generation enters the equation. Based on prior positive experience at a sister facility, Likuliku’s management team headed by Steve Anstey and Jason Philp, decided to approach the Cummins team to look into an overhaul of the power system.

Cummins Power Generation helps keep trucking company rolling

D&T Trucking specialized in delivering refrigerated loads across the country. But one morning everything ground to a halt, thanks to a power outage at the St. Paul, Minnesota headquarters. With power gone, the drivers of the 125 reefer trucks on the road weren’t reachable — their cell phone numbers were stored on the office computers. None of the office software applications were available, the fuel pumps were out of action and potential new business calls went unanswered.

The owner resolved that his business would never again be knocked out by a loss of grid power. Taking advantage of the fact that the company had thousands of gallons of diesel fuel in underground tanks, he worked with Cummins NPower, the local distributor, and Heights Electric, a local electrical contractor, to size and install a standby diesel generator set and automatic transfer switch.

As the owner anticipated, there were indeed subsequent grid outages. But the Cummins system never failed to deliver backup power, ensuring smooth business as usual for D&T — trucks rolling out and customer calls rolling in. Read the complete D&T Trucking case history here.

Primary Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) can boast a century of excellence in pediatric care and recognition as one of the best children’s hospitals in the country. But an aging cogeneration power plant meant high maintenance costs. A new case history documents how technical and space constraints were overcome with a new, more reliable and more automated system.

The hospital wanted a more hands-free, lower-maintenance system that could handle all or almost all of its loads, not just essential equipment. And they wanted to keep a generator set from another supplier that was added several years ago but required a lot of manual intervention in the event of a power outage.

The solution provided by Cummins Power Generation and Cummins Rocky Mountain overcame the technical issue of a different winding pitch on the non-Cummins generator set, as well as extremely tight space limitations. Click here to find out how the challenges were solved.

Innovative Cummins power solution at Oregon State Hospital

A new case history tells the story of a partnership that overcame a number of challenges and resulted in an innovative power solution for the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, the primary adult psychiatric center for the state. The entire campus is on the National Register of Historic Places, and includes some 19th century brick and stone buildings. But, previous updates to the physical plant had left a less-than-ideal power configuration.

The solution meant signing up for the Dispatchable Standby Generation (DSG) program of Portland General Electric (PGE). Under this program, the utility contributes to the capital cost of the standby installation and assumes responsibility for its maintenance. In return, PGE can use some of the electricity produced; up to a specified number of hours per year.

Participating in the program introduced a new set of requirements, which required the close collaboration of the hospital facility staff, the electrical and general contractors, the local distributor Cummins Northwest and Cummins Power Generation. Read the whole story HERE

Cummins Power Generation helps bring power back to a war-damaged capital

Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, suffered extensive damage during years of civil war, including to its electrical infrastructure. To help restore electricity, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) donated a prime power plant for the city. The job of getting the plant installed and operating fell to Berger/Cummins, a partnership of The Louis Berger Group and Cummins Power Generation. A new case history tells how they did it.

The people of Berger/Cummins routinely work in harsh, challenging environments and take on difficult projects, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Liberia assignment called for a 10 MW power plant to be installed, including multiple generator sets, transformers and paralleling switchgear monitored and controlled by a PowerCommand® Pulse system.

Berger/Cummins completed the project on time and on budget, and turned the operation of the plant over to the Liberia Electricity Corporation, after training its staff. A highlight of the project was the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was attended by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the president of Liberia and a 2011 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The case history documenting this challenging and rewarding project is available here.

For several years, Cummins Onan has been a trusted partner of Cafe2U, first as Cafe2U pioneered the concept of mobile coffee vans in Australia and later in Britain and Ireland. So it was natural that when Cafe2U planned its franchise business expansion into the United States, it turned for help to Cummins Onan.

When Cafe2U started in Australia, it quickly earned a devoted following for its espresso-based drinks served at workplaces and special events. Their high-quality drinks were provided by barista-drivers from vans powered by reliable Cummins Onan generators.

Now, Cafe2U has selected the Ford Transit Connect van—upfitted with our Commercial Mobile QG 5500 generator—as the vehicle for its U.S. business. The prototype van/generator combo passed a year-long U.S. test marketing with flying colors.  Next steps call for 3,000 such vans to blanket the U.S. with mobile baristas serving lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos and more. A new case history detailing this successful Cummins Onan/Cafe2U partnership is accessible here.

Cummins Power Generation provides complete build-install-operate solution for another Australian peaking power plant

Infratil Energy Australia (IEA) already has three peaking power plants in operation comprising some 100 MW of capacity. The company wanted to add another peaking power plant at the Port Stanvac Power Station in Lonsdale, near Adelaide. Once again Cummins Power Generation, through Cummins Energy Solutions Business South Pacific, was chosen to design, build and operate the plant. Its construction, which met more than the usual requirements, is the subject of a new case history.

The first challenge: The site was already occupied by the 20 MW Lonsdale Power Station, which had to be decommissioned, refurbished and moved to adjacent land. Then, as with the other IEA peaking power plants, there were strict environmental standards for noise and emissions. At the same time, the new plant had to be able to meet short-term demands for electricity by starting within five minutes.

The result is 57 MW of peaking power, delivered by 36 diesel-fueled generator sets managed by a DMC300 Master Controller. The case history is here.
