New Cummins Power Generation white paper on matching technology to emission standards
Cummins has issued a white paper on the EPA emission standards that took effect in 2011 and how they affect emergency standby power systems. The white paper, by Gary Johansen, Executive Director of Worldwide Engineering, reviews the evolution of emission standards, discusses the different requirements for standby power and examines various options to meet the new Tier 4 standards. The white paper explains that choosing the appropriate emergency standby power system depends on the particular application. For example, if an organization desires to run its generator sets for longer than the strict limits allowed for emergency standby power, then a T4-compliant system should be considered. The paper also explores how Cummins is combining its proven in-cylinder technologies with new aftertreatment innovations for a solution that meets or exceeds the Tier 4 standards. The white paper is available here.

New Cummins Power Generation white paper provides practical guidance on design decisions for standby power in data centers
A new white paper by Richard Hallahan of Cummins Power Generation reviews three key factors to consider when determining the power distribution infrastructure for a data center: the size of the system, the reliability architecture that is selected, and the operational complexity of delivering power to the critical loads. The white paper provides practical measurement calculations and recommendations to make sure that standby power systems are able to supply power to critical loads when needed. The white paper is available here.

Cummins Power Generation issues white paper on factors in selecting power systems for wireless telecommunications towers
Wireless networks are experiencing explosive growth. In Africa alone, some 50 million new wireless subscribers are projected over just the next two years. This growth will require a rapid build-out of wireless infrastructure, including base transceiver stations (cell towers) in both urban and rural locations. Most towers will require generator sets to provide either backup or prime power. A new white paper by Wissam Balshe, Group Leader, Sales Application Engineering, examines the factors that should be considered in selecting, configuring and deploying these generator sets. The white paper discusses the various factors that determine the power requirements for cell towers, including the reliability of the grid in the region. Many so-called standby generator sets in cell towers are in fact running several hours a day. Another factor is the specific location and load profile. For example, the load profile is quite different if an indoor unit requires air conditioning. The paper also discusses important topics such as harmonic distortion, DC and AC current, sulphation in batteries, sound attenuation, and sizing requirements for alternators and engines. The white paper is available here.

New white paper from Cummins Power Generation examines issues and methods of electrical connections for generator sets
Selecting the right generator set is not the only critical consideration in a successful installation. For reliable power it is also crucial to ensure that the load conductors are properly connected to the generator set. A new white paper from Cummins Power Generation by Munir Kaderbhai, Sales Application Engineer, examines the issues involved in these connections and the different ways these connections can be made. The white paper discusses important differences between molded case and insulated case circuit breakers, top entry versus bottom entry for conductors, and 80% versus 100% ratings for circuit breakers. It also explores the relationships among temperature ratings, cable ampacity and ambient temperatures. Finally, the paper offers recommendations on bracing requirements and ways to handle vibration. The white paper is available here. |

New white paper explores potential and benefits of turning landfill waste into energy
Landfills emit a large amount of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. But increasingly, methane is being converted into useful energy and revenue by generator sets that use methane as fuel. This is the subject of a new white paper by Keith Packham, application engineering manager for Cummins Power Generation. The white paper describes how capturing methane using reciprocating engine generator sets has become more cost-effective and popular in the last decade. In Europe, there are about 400 such landfill plants today, with most of them in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. In the U.S., the number of waste-to-energy landfill plants is increasing rapidly, currently exceeding 500. The Viridor Waste Management plant in Scotland is profiled in detail. The plant uses four low-Btu gas generator sets from Cummins Power Generation to produce 7 MW of electricity from decaying rubbish. The white paper can be accessed here

New white paper explores proper configuration of automatic transfer switches for MRI machines
MRI has long been a useful, noninvasive medical imaging tool to help doctors visualize the internal structure of the human body. A new white paper by Ken Box of Cummins The proper application of automatic transfer switches is critical to maintaining the reliability of MRI machines during utility power interruptions when the emergency standby system is operating. However, because of the sensitive nature of MRI scanners, electronic noise must be filtered out or eliminated altogether. The white paper details how this requirement must be considered in the configuring of automatic transfer switches, especially in the use of programmed and closed transition, as well as in the synchronizing and paralleling of power sources. The white paper is available here. |
